Are Air Fryers Loud?

Imagine purchasing a new air fryer only to find out that it makes terrible noises when it cooks. Wouldn’t that be a bother? I mean, you’re given 20 minutes of total freedom while the air fryer is cooking – wouldn’t you want to spend those in a peaceful environment, perhaps with a little bit of music, a podcast, or nothing at all – or maybe you’re living with others who are easily irritated by loud noises?

Whatever your reason for asking this question may be, I totally understand why you’re wondering. Trust me, I spent way too much time looking for the right vacuum cleaner because I wanted one that barely made any noise. It’s an important factor.

Are air fryers loud? An air fryer that works properly shouldn’t make more noise than the average air conditioner, which is about 65db. But every model is different, some models are louder and others are quieter. If your air fryer is making strange rattling noises you should contact customer support.

In order to get more specific answers regarding different brands and models, I would have to get in contact with different companies.

So that’s what I did. I e-mailed a bunch of different companies that manufacture air fryers to ask them about the noise level of the air fryers.

Here’s a list that shows at what decibel these air fryers operate. These are the answers I was given by customer support or information that I’ve found by reading instruction manuals.

  • GoWISE USA Air Fryers: The only noise the air fryers make is the sound of the fan inside the unit spinning (like a hum, similar to a microwave) and the beeps that the air fryer makes whenever a button is pressed or when your cooking cycle has finished.
  • Philips Air Fryers: Max 64.4 decibel for all models
  • Cozyna Air Fryers: The average noise level is around 30 decibel
  • Ninja Air Fryers: The ninja air fryers have an average noise level between 30-60db.
  • Omorc Air Fryers: We are sorry that we have not tested the noise level yet. But the noise is very low.
  • Cosori Air Fryers: The decibel range of the CP158-AF (5.8 qt) model air fryer is no more than 65 dB, which is between the sound range of an air conditioner and a dishwasher. We will have to ask more to inquire about the CP138-AF (3.8 qt) model, but it is likely that it is around a similar range as well
  • Dash Air Fryers: Our units do make a sound. It is not loud, though it will be as if you had a fan running on a low setting.
  • Avalon Bay Air Fryers: The Avalon air fryers are not a very loud unit, they have a noise level of 15dB

Is My Air Fryer Supposed To Make Loud Noises? Are Air Fryers Noisy?

Yes and no, depending on the model and the sound it makes. If you’re looking for an air fryer that doesn’t make any noise at all, you’re gonna have to a hard time finding one, however, there are really silent ones.

Nevertheless, you need to keep in mind that air fryers cook food by circulating hot air with the help of a rotating fan. When the air fryer is cooking, the fan will rotate fast – this produces a sound similar to that of a microwave. But, as I said before and as shown by the bulleted list above – there is a big difference between different models of air fryers and the noise-level they operate at.

An air fryer that doesn’t function properly can make strange noises, most commonly produced by the fan. If you happen to hear strange rattling noises coming from your air fryer while cooking, you should stop the cooking cycle and unplug the appliance. Something inside the air fryer is most likely loose.

But don’t worry, if there is something loose inside your air fryer you won’t have a hard time distinguishing the sound it makes from the sound of a fully functioning air fryer fan. Both I and the people over at customer support recommend that you get in contact with them if you happen to hear these sounds coming from your air fryer.

There’s a chance that the strange sound doesn’t stop your air fryer from working properly. But it will surely cause irritation and problems down the road and should, therefore, be reported to customer support as quickly as possible so you can get a completely new unit, your unit repaired or replacement parts sent your way.

Of course, air fryers also come with beeping sounds to signal to the user that the cooking cycle is finished. Others come with mechanical timers that tick while the air fryer cooks. These sounds are, in my opinion, minor problems in comparison to the sound produced by the air fryer’s fan.

Replacing an Air Fryer Fan

While I still recommend getting in contact with customer support when replacing malfunction parts, some users have replaced the fan themselves.

Here’s a video showing an example of how it’s done.

How Do Air Fryers Work?

Deep fryers submerge battered foods in boiling oil to create a crunchy outer layer – which is full of calories and trans fats. The air fryer can produce similar results while cutting up to 80% fat content.

This is possible with the help of the convection mechanism, the Maillard reaction, a heating element, and a fan.

The heated air inside the air fryer is circulated through the fryer and blasted at the food. The dry heat of the air fryer dries the outer surface of foods, which produces a crispy surface.

The brown surface and unique taste of air-fried food is achieved by something called the Maillard reaction, which is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars.

Conclusion: Are Air Fryers Noisy?

If your air fryer is functioning properly it shouldn’t make more noise than a countertop microwave or a dishwasher – around 65db. Generally, the air fryer makes more noise the faster the fan rotates and the bigger the fan is.

With that said, you should know that any air fryer, small or big, can make terrible noises too. This is the product of loose internal parts that are thrown around the air fryer when the fan rotates.

For smaller apartments, dorm rooms and campers, I recommend an air fryer that makes less noise when cooking. In small areas, even the smallest of sounds may be overwhelming and cause frustration.
