How Much Space Do You Need For an Ice Machine?

The amount of space you will need for your ice machine depends on the size. However, for most common-sized at-home ice machines, you will need a minimum of one foot between the counter and above cupboards. Additionally, you will need several inches for the vents to breathe. 

Most small ice machines (such as the ones we listed) can fit comfortably on a countertop. They are larger than an air fryer but typically smaller than a microwave or conventional oven.

If you are looking to keep it below a cupboard, make sure you leave 6 inches to 1 foot between it. 

This will allow you to easily open the top of your bin without scraping your cabinets. Most small ice machines are between 2-3 feet tall, so check this before ordering yours.

Make sure you have at least two inches between the unit and the back wall and appliances alongside it. This will allow your machine to breathe, so it does not overheat. 

Can You Get An Industrial Ice Maker in Your Home?

It must be left plugged in during the ice production. But, if you have a clear ice maker, you can unplug it once it finishes since the ice bin is not usually refrigerated for these units. 

If you have a traditional ice maker, you will want to leave it plugged in until the ice is used up. To avoid wasted energy and thus a high power bill, you should try to make just the amount you think you will use.

Still, with all these safety mechanisms, people wonder if it’s safe to leave an Instant Pot unattended while it’s cooking.

Instant Pots have safety features that allow the user to leave the appliance unattended while it’s cooking as long as the Instant Pot has been placed in a safe location, which means a flat surface and far away from other objects. Once the Instant Pot has been started, it will require no manual input from the user. Still, you should not leave the house while the Instant Pot is cooking.

Instant pots come with security and safety mechanisms such as lid locks and sensors to prevent potential accidents. Therefore, nothing bad SHOULD happen to your Instant Pot while you’re away. However, because we’re dealing with an electric appliance that reaches high temperatures, there are risks involved.

You should not expect an Instant Pot to always work as intended, even though it will 99.99% of the time.

Can You Leave an Instant Pot Unattended?

While the risks involved with leaving an Instant Pot unattended are very low, they’re still there. You should be safe if you’re somewhere else in your house or out in your yard and check on the appliance once in a while, but we do not recommend leaving the house.

The accident doesn’t have to be caused by the appliance itself. It could be caused by mother nature through weather, or by animals playing in proximity to the appliance while it’s running.

Instant Pots are much quicker than slow cookers. You can cook a meal that would take 7-8 hours in a slow cooker in no more than 1 hour in the pressure cooker. The Instant Pot comes with a keep-warm function that keeps the food outside of the “danger zone” where bacteria starts to form.

Because of the Instant Pot’s automatic features, you’ll be able to be somewhere else in the house without overcooking your meals. There are some safety measures that should be applied before you set and forget your Instant Pot.

Before you decide to leave an Instant Pot unattended:

  • Make sure the Instant Pot isn’t overfilled as it could lead to food spilling it, making a mess.
  • Make sure the Instant Pot has liquid in it. You don’t want to run the Instant Pot without a little amount of liquid.
  • Make sure the Instant Pot is placed on a flat surface capable of handling the temperatures.
  • Make sure the Instant Pot isn’t located close to the edge of the countertop
  • Make sure the Instant Pot isn’t close to other objects
  • Make sure the Instant Pot is firmly positioned and can’t be moved by pets, the wind, or anything else that might fall onto it

Can You Leave an Instant Pot On Overnight?

Leaving appliances on overnight, regardless of what appliance we’re talking about, is a risk. This isn’t unique to cooking or kitchen appliances, it applies to every electric appliance in your home.

You may remember what happened to phone chargers a couple of years back. They started burning and manufacturers recommended that chargers shouldn’t be plugged in overnight.

So what’s the deal with Instant Pots, should they be left on overnight? They’re pretty much automated and are very safe – but is it safe enough?

An Instant Pot can be left on overnight if the appliance is set to run on the keep-warm function. You should not run a regular cooking cycle in a pressure cooker overnight unless you’re awake and can supervise it.

Instant Pots are electric cooking appliances with incredible safety features, but they can still malfunction.

The keep-warm feature keeps food warm until you’re ready to eat it. It can be automatically activated for up to 10 hours and manually for up to 99 hours and 50 minutes. 

The keep-warm function can guarantee that your food is safe to eat after 10 hours by keeping it at the right temperature throughout the night.

While a lot of people leave their Instant Pots on overnight with the keep-warm function running, we do not want to recommend that you do it.

We do it ourselves, but we’re well aware of the risks and have a designated safe spot where our Instant Pot is placed.

The keep-warm function is nowhere near as hot as the regular cooking temperature is. In addition to that, the pressure inside the cooker has depressurized when the regular cooking cycle has finished.

The benefit of the feature comes with certain precautions that need to be undertaken. If you decide to leave your instant pot on overnight, you need to put it in a ventilated area.

All of the steps we mentioned earlier should also be applied.

Remember: We do not recommend leaving your appliance on overnight.

How Long Can You Leave Food In an Instant Pot?

If you have your instant pot in a warm setting, most foods can stay safe for at least 10 hours. And even though the food might lose its texture and taste, you can still consume it without health concerns.

Since the inner dish of instant pots is made from stainless steel, you aren’t exposed to any danger of unsafe materials getting into your food if you decide to leave the food sitting in the pot after cooking it.

However, if the pot’s ambient temperature isn’t safe for preserving cooked food, you’re likely to notice bacterial growth after some time. In such a case, the food won’t be safe for human consumption after 2 hours in the “danger zone”. 

The danger zone for bacterial growth is when food is left at temperatures between 140-40 degrees Fahrenheit. This zone is neither too hot nor too cold for bacteria to thrive, making it possible for them to multiply.

If you check most instant pot instruction manuals, you’ll notice some warnings against keeping perishables such as rice, fish, or meat in your instant pot at room temperature. 

Foods To Keep In An Instant Pot

There are so many foods that you can keep in your instant under the keep warm function. This includes stews, soups, and other food options that can simmer for long periods. 

However, avoid keeping delicate foods in the instant pot since they can lose their appeal and become mushy. Such foods include pasta and leafy vegetables. 

Some foods, especially those placed directly in an instant pot, might lose their texture or dry if kept warm for long. One good example of a food that dries when exposed to high temperatures is rice. 

Do Instant Pots Turn Off Automatically?

Absolutely! Instant pots are designed with a feature that stops them from cooking once the set cooking time has finished. You can then decide if the appliance should turn off completely or if it should activate the keep warm function.

This way, there is no need to run back immediately when the food is ready. In fact, you can take longer as you prepare to eat your food. 

The feature functions by reeling pressure slowly to prevent the food from cooking. However, we guarantee you that your food will still remain warm. 

After the pot turns off, you might see steam coming out or heat whistling. This is either the pressure release valve or the keep warm feature at work. 

Just so you know, if the pot emits pressure while still cooking, it’s doing so to keep a certain safe level. However, it does so while on the warming feature as a sign that food is ready but being kept warm. 

Can You Leave an Instant Pot On Keep Warm Unattended?

Yes! You can leave your instant pot unattended at least for the cooking duration. And for your information, instant pots normally cook faster compared to slow cookers. For instance, while it’ll take a slow cooker 7-8 hours to cook, an instant pot only takes 1-2 hours. 

We recommend against turning your instant pot on and leaving for work. However, if you’re just around the house, you can comfortably leave it unattended. 

You’ll notice that it doesn’t need much supervision. You need to be as close as possible to turning it off when it’s through with cooking. 

Is It Safe Leaving Your Pot Unattended?

If you have not overfilled your pot and have set it appropriately, then it’s safe to leave it unattended for a short time. As we’ve seen, the pot normally finishes cooking food in 1-2 hours. You can use this time to do something else. 

However, ensure you’re not far from the kitchen for safety purposes.

Before leaving the pot unattended, ensure it isn’t overfilled: 

  • The pot cooks food using a tight seal and pressure. The heat and steam generated usually cook food faster. Overfilling won’t provide room for steam. 
  • Overfilling can translate into food spillage that might mess up your countertop. 

Put your instant pot on the countertop away from the edges for safety purposes. 

What Safety Features Do Instant Pots Have?

All modern instant pots are designed with safety features to protect the device from damage and the user from injuries. Generally, the safety features are meant to prevent potential errors that might arise while using the pot. 

Below are some common safety features worth mentioning:

  • Stream Release Valve

This is a manually operated valve created to release pressure from the instant pot. This happens before you can safely take the lid off. 

Note that the steam release from the instant pot is normally extremely hot and, if you aren’t careful, can lead to serious injuries or burns. The work of the valve is to eliminate these risks. 

  • Anti-Block Shield

This is an inner layer shield made from stainless steel. It prevents food from clocking and blocking the pot’s steam release pipe. 

  • Automatic Temperature Control

Every instant pot is designed with a microprocessor that regulates intensity and heat. This ensures that the post remains in a safe temperature range during operation. 

  • Overheat Protection

Although modern instant pots are smart devices, they sometimes experience overheating when in use. And when it overheats, you’ll see a burning message. In response, the program lowers the heat output to prevent food from burning. 

  • Safety Lid Lock

This is a special lock meant to keep the pot’s lid from opening when the pot experiences pressure. The lock will only open when the pressure reduces. 

Avoid opening the lid by force. Force opening an instant pot will cause serious injuries and burns. 

  • Lid Position Detection

This safety measure ensures that the lid is in a safe position during operation. It guarantees that all the seals and locks are in the right position before cooking begins. 

  • Thermal Fuse

When the pot’s internal temperature exceeds the maximum acceptable limits, it’ll cut off power. 

  • Automatic Pressure Control

According to the physics laws, an increase in pressure causes an increase in temperature. It means that when pressure exceeds the acceptable limits, your food might burn. Therefore an automatic pressure control is put in place to stop the cooking process when such a scenario occurs. 

  • Electrical Fuse

If the power supply experiences any problems, the electrical fuse will cut off the power.

For those that prefer non-chemical preserved foods, dehydration is a lifesaver.

But not all people understand how they work and the safety precautions to operate one successfully. 

And, since some dehydrator recipes dry for longer than 12 hours, you may be wondering if it’s possible to keep it running for that long. Should you leave it overnight? Or should you run it only when you’re around?

It’s safe to leave your dehydrator on overnight. Dehydrators are designed to run for more than 12 hours, just ensure that you follow the proper drying procedures and safety precautions to avoid overdrying your food. Additionally, good dehydrators have automatic shut-off timers, so you won’t have to stress over them. 

However, similar to any electrical appliance, always go for high-quality dehydrators. Cheaper ones can have defective wiring and accessories, which cause heat build-up within the dehydrators and can pose a fire hazard.

Is It Safe to Leave a Dehydrator On Overnight?

Now that you’re aware that you can leave your dehydrator overnight, you might ask whether it’s safe to do so. Here’s all you need to know.

The dehydrators, by design, can work non-stop for as long as three days or even more. Some fruits take 24 to 36 hours to dry completely, meaning that your dehydrators have to be on. As such, it’s safe to leave them on overnight. 

Also, leaving it on overnight is beneficial to those who go to work in the morning and come back in the evenings. I would prefer to have it on at night when I’m around, whether sleeping or not, more than having it on during the day when I’m not around. Additionally, dehydrators have the same minute fire risk as refrigerators. 

Safety Tips For Dehydrator

When using electrical appliances, ensure maximum safety as they’re fire hazards; and so too is the dehydrator. Here are some safety tips when drying food.

  • Check for damaged or faulty parts periodically. Return your dehydrator to the nearest authorized service shop for repair or examination when it starts malfunctioning. And ensure that the repair shop uses only factory original accessories and parts during repair.
  • Disconnect the appliance from the power source before cleaning, changing accessories, or servicing. 
  • Ensure that the appliance is stable while you’re using it. All four feet must be firmly on a flat surface to limit movement during operation. 
  • Don’t operate dehydrators close to any combustible or flammable material. Also, only operate them indoors while allowing for proper air circulation.
  • After cleaning, ensure that your dehydrator is fully dry before powering it on to lessen electrocution cases.
  • Don’t modify the electrical plug, as doing so exposes you to electrical shocks. 

How Long Do You Dehydrate Different Foods?

Dehydrating food is a practice that has been used for generations to save up enough food reserves for winters and droughts. And, as it’s effective, we are now turning to technology to make the process even faster and safer. 

However, a significant challenge is that most people don’t have a clear picture of the setting and time it takes to dehydrate their food. 

Meat

For meat, once you’ve preheated it at 160°F, keep your dehydrator at a temperature of 130 to 140°F for 6 to 12 hours until it’s hard. Here are the reasons why

  • The dehydration process must be quick enough to prevent the food from spoiling.
  • It must dehydrate/ remove water at a rate that doesn’t allow the growth of microorganisms.

Illnesses due to bacteria strains found in dehydrated food will always bring doubt and raise questions about the safety of dehydration as a method of food preservation.

However, most of these complaints arise due to poor food handling practices that introduce pathogens into the food before dehydration. 

Also, different foods have different methods of preparation that you have to be aware of. For example, The USDA Meat and Poultry recommends that we heat meat first to 160°F before commencing the dehydrating processes. 

Preheating meat ascertains that the wet heat will eliminate any disease-causing pathogens present. You might not find instructions about preheating meat in most dehydrators, as some might not reach sufficient temperatures to preheat meat. 

Chicken and Turkey

For chicken, first, preheat/ cook it at 165°F to destroy some heat-resistant bacteria. You’ll then spread it in your dehydrator at a temperature of 145°F for 6 to 12 hours until completely dry. 

Drying times vary depending on circumstances such as: 

  • Your room’s relative humidity.
  • The poultry’s temperature at the start of dehydrating.
  • The food load.
  • The leanness of your meat. 

You may need to blot fat droplets from the surface of your poultry occasionally. 

Fruits

First, position the fruits in a single layer on dehydrating trays and set your dehydrators at 135 to 145°F. 

Fruits such as nectarines, apples, peaches, and bananas have drying times between 6 to 16 hours. Figs, grapes, pears, and apricots last longer and can take 20 to 36 hours to dry thoroughly.

You’ll know that the dehydration is complete if the fruits become leathery. 

Vegetables

First, you’ll steam or blanch the tough and fibrous vegetables or the ones that you wouldn’t eat while raw. These include beans, sweet potatoes, potatoes, corn, asparagus, carrots, broccoli, etc. Don’t steam okra, celery, mushrooms, spinach, and other soft vegetables. 

Here are the dehydrating times and temperatures

The best dehydrating temperature for vegetables is 125°F to avoid scorching. As a result, it will take anywhere from 4 to 13 hours to dehydrate depending on the vegetable, dehydrator rating, load size, ambient humidity, etc. 

Grains

Dehydrate all cooked grains such as rice at 145°F for 6 to 12 hours until you feel that they’re completely dry. Various online sources suggest that you can dehydrate grains at temperatures as low as 125°F, but that information is misleading. Bacteria such as Bacillus cereus thrive in temperatures lower than 135°F.

Pasta

Dehydrate pasta at 135°F for 6 to 12 hours until it gets brittle and dry. Additionally, spread it evenly on your dehydrator tray to minimize the thickness of the layer.  

Beans and Lentils

Dehydrate beans and lentils at 125°F for 6 to 12 hours or until you feel that they’re hard. And, home pressure cooked beans don’t dehydrate as well as canned beans. Regardless, both beans and lentils dehydrate and rehydrate well.

How Hot Do Dehydrators Get?

How hot your dehydrator can get depends on the make and model. But generally, most will get to a 165 to 170°F maximum heat rating. 

The USDA recommends that all-purpose dehydrators should be able to dehydrate meat at 160°F and poultry at 165°F. But that figure shouldn’t limit you; some dehydrators get hotter than 200°F.

Can a Dehydrator Overheat and Catch On Fire?

Yes! They can quickly overheat and catch fire due to several factors. These include:

  • A faulty heating element
  • Broken or malfunctioning fan blades
  • You might be underloading your batches

Therefore, before using a dehydrator, check to ensure that all parts are working. Also, inspect the moving parts such as fans for alignment and binding issues.

Don’t block the air vents at the back of your dehydrator, as they’re essential for air and heat circulation. 

Blocking these air vents may cause the temperatures to rise excessively and cause a fire. As a result, keep your dehydrator a minimum of 6 inches or 15 cm away from the wall.

What Happens If You Leave Food In a Dehydrator For Too Long?

The essence of drying food is to remove as much water as possible to limit bacterial growth. Therefore, leaving food in the dehydrator for extended periods overdrive the food leaving it inedible. 

Overdrying also rids the food of nutrients and can result in hardening; when the outside of the fruit dries excessively, it turns into a hard shell before it’s dried.

The hard surface restricts moisture release from the inside of the fruit and can cause mold development during storage.

Do Dehydrators Turn Off Automatically?

Some do shut off automatically while others don’t. Just like any electrical appliance at home or work, dehydrators have different safety and convenience features that vary from one model or make to another. In other words, you’ll get what you pay for. 

Some cheap dehydrators don’t have essential components such as fans or adjustable temperature settings despite relying on proper air circulation and temperatures to dry your food.

Therefore, unless your dehydrator has an automatic shut-off feature, don’t expect it to turn off automatically.  

A timer with an automatic shut-off works similar to the sensor-actuator systems in our cars. If you’re drying meat that you suspect will take close to 9 hours but are not sure, you can set your timer to run for 6 hours. Afterward, the timer acts as a sensor and triggers the automatic shut-off feature to turn off the dehydrator. 

Another time when you can use the timer and automatic shut-off feature is when you’re drying different food simultaneously. Let’s say you’re drying vegetables and fruits. 

You can set your dehydrator to turn off automatically when the vegetables are dry. You can then come back and turn it on later to continue drying the fruits.

Then make sure that the magnet connectors and the surrounding components aren’t covered in residue, as that could prevent them from connecting and functioning properly.

Also, make sure that the copper tabs are aligned and make contact when the lever is pushed down to ensure that the solenoid can be energized. If the toaster’s copper tabs don’t make contact, align them and bend them back in position so they make contact once again.

Replace the Magnet

Over time, the magnet will take damage as the lever strikes it every time it’s pushed down. This, in combination with regular wear and tear, could cause the magnet to stop working. In that case, you will have to replace the magnet itself.

Locating the magnet within your toaster is easiest to do with the help of your manual. The manual should tell you exactly where the magnet is located, and in some cases how to replace it too.

When you have located the magnet, remove it and place the new magnet in its position. Make sure you place the new magnet exactly as the old one was placed.

Start your device and see if the lever stays down now that you’ve replaced the old magnet. If it doesn’t, try flipping the magnet, as you may have changed the polarity when doing the replacement.

Check If the Lever Is Blocked

Soap is not the only way to properly clean your dishes and it is certainly not the cheapest! The truth is there are many alternatives to dish soap that can properly clean your dishes. Keep reading if you want to learn more about your options.

Is It Safe to Wash Dishes With Only Water?

You can wash dishes without soap as long as you follow certain procedures. Hot water and some sort of abrasive medium should be used in order to remove food debris and sanitize the surface. For most residential households’ dirty dishes soap is not necessary in order to remove germs and bacteria. 

For most of human history, soap and disinfectants were not available (or even invented). Thus, people used to rely on other means of washing their dishes after eating. 

Soap and disinfectants are beneficial for humans, but they aren’t necessarily needed for your dishes to be clean. In fact, one of the most effective and safe ways to properly clean your dishes is with hot water. 

This is because sink sponges often carry bacteria on them. When you rub the sponge on the dish it may pass on the bacteria to the vessel.

This is not to say sponges aren’t safe or should not be used. It simply illustrates that soap is not a disinfectant so much as an agent. 

An agent is added to a dirtied surface to loosen debris and take it off. For dirty dishes soap acts as a solvent for grease and other caked-on substances and helps remove them easier. 

The same result can be accomplished by using very hot water and some other available agents. In the past people successfully used animal fat, oil, sand, and other coarse or slippery materials. 

Oil and animal fat is useful because it basically helps to loosen debris and thus come off easier. Think of how slick it is, and you’ll understand why it helps remove everything from a baking pan including flour to eggs. 

It is important you use hot water when you wash your dishes, regardless of the agent you choose. Hot water is the thing that will remove and kill any lingering bacteria and make your dishes safe for cooking! 

What Do Soaps and Detergents Do to Dirty Dishes?

Soaps and detergents break down debris, oils, and germs. However, detergent and soap act differently to accomplish these goals and are composed of different substances. Detergent is usually composed of chemicals that act powerfully against debris on substances while the soap is made of fats and other binding agents. 

The main difference between these substances is how they clean a surface. Detergent acts more as a harsh cleaning agent on very soiled or dirty surfaces. Detergent clings to the dirt and dissolves and breaks it down. This is why people use detergent in laundry and dishwashers. 

Detergent not only has some harsh chemicals but also several enzymes that eat and dissolve unwanted substances. The enzyme’s proteases and lipases break down oils and fats while other enzymes such as amylases break down dirt and starch. 

Meanwhile, soap is usually made of surfactants. These are binding agents such as oils and fats which connect with dirt and fats and draw them away from the surface. In this way, it cleans surfaces by removing unwanted substances. 

Water is naturally polar while many surface contaminants are opposed to the charge of water. This is why water tends to roll off your skin rather than being absorbed into your body. Soap changes this and allows water to interact with the surface and draw impurities away from it. 

Therefore, it is important to note that soap and even most detergents do not sanitize or disinfect surfaces. They clean surfaces by drawing and dissolving dirt and contaminants from the surface. 

Should You Wash Dishes In Hot or Cold Water?

You should definitely use hot water when washing your dishes. Hot water acts as a purifier and disinfectant on dirty surfaces. The hotter the water the more bacteria and germs are killed and the more sanitary the surface will be. 

You can think of hot water as a soap’s best friend. Hot water pairs with the oils of soap and works to break down and remove all dirt, grime, and grease. 

Since soap is not a disinfectant you should use hot water to sanitize your dishes. You should use hot water rather than tepid or warm water, especially if you just cooked eggs or raw meat. 

As an extra level of protection against contamination from such foods, never use your dish sponge to clean these surfaces. A better option is a dish rag or disposable washcloth. After cleaning the dishes, wash your rag in the washing machine and do not use it on your other dishes. 

Hot water is safer than using bleach or other harsh agents to sanitize your dishes since it does not leave a dangerous residue. And, if you use very hot water you can be sure that the surface has been cleaned and sanitized for the next use. 

There are two effective ways of cleaning your dishes with hot water. The most direct way is to use the hottest water your hands can stand and let it run over the dish surface as you scrub it with a soapy sponge. 

Another way is to rinse the surface in warm water and scrub with a soapy sponge. After the surface is free of debris, place your rinsed dishes in a large basin filled with boiling hot water. Allow the dishes to soak in here and remove after several minutes (or after the water cools). 

Both of these methods will clean and sanitize your dishes so you will feel safe the next time you cook!

Is Water Enough to Remove Germs From Dirty Dishes?

Water is not enough to remove germs from your dirty dishes, despite the fact you don’t necessarily need soap to accomplish this. This may sound confusing, but the answer lies in the removal of contamination and sanitation. 

A surface must be cleaned and sanitized in order for it to be fully cleansed. This is why you cannot simply spray your bathroom down with Lysol and assume it is sanitized. 

This applies to dishes as well. To properly clean and sanitize a dish surface you must do the following: 

  1. Thoroughly wipe and remove any clinging contaminants
  2. Soak the dish in a sanitizing agent or rinse with scalding hot water
  3. Permit it an appropriate time to dry or dry with a clean towel

You can’t sanitize grease, food particles, or other residues. The surface must be thoroughly cleaned and then you can sanitize it with hot water to remove any lingering bacteria. 

Water, as we discussed in a previous section, is a polar particle. This means it does not naturally bind to other substances, it washes over them. This is why even if you don’t have antibacterial soap you should still wash your hands with soap and water in order for them to be really clean. 

Soap permits the water to bind to the debris and pull it away and thus cleaning the surface. After the debris is removed the hot water acts to sanitize the surface and kill the germs. 

However, as we discussed in one of the earlier sections, soap is not the only medium that accomplishes this. So even though hot water is not enough to kill the germs on your dishes, you do not necessarily need soap to accomplish this either. 

How Hot Does Water Have to Be to Sanitize Dishes?

The FDA and other health institutions advise that dishes be washed in water between 110-165 degrees Fahrenheit (43-74 degrees celsius). These temperatures are necessary to ensure the debris is removed and the surface is properly disinfected. 

You can of course use hotter water if you wish, but make sure you are careful of burning your hands. Especially if you use boiling water to soak and sanitize your clean dishes after washing them. 

For most at-home dishwashers the standard temperature setting is 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Although the unit is capable of reaching higher temperatures and lower temperatures, this is the generally accepted safe temperature for killing bacteria. 

It is harder to know for sure how hot your tap water gets, however. Temperatures seem to range wildly from town to town according to self-reporting homeowners. Additionally, the temperature can be impacted by the age of the pipes in the home and the quality of water systems in the area. 

However, generally speaking, if the water feels hot to the touch it should be sufficient for cleaning your dishes. If you are concerned about it, try using a thermometer to check the average temperature. Or, you can use boiled water as we discussed before. 

What Can You Substitute For Soap When Washing Dishes?

You do not need soap to clean your dishes, and you can easily use other surfactants which draw debris and contaminants from the surface. For dishes, the biggest culprits of annoying debris are animal fats and burnt foods which can be dissolved and removed with abrasive and solvent substances. 

One of the safest and most effective soap substitutes are baking powder, baking soda, and salt. You can easily add a small amount of the solvent to the surface of the pan or other dish and use a sponge or other dishcloth to wipe down the surface. 

After cleaning the dish with the solvent start rinsing it beneath hot water and continue scrubbing as you do. Baking soda and salt are actually common ingredients in most soaps and are an effective method of dissolving debris and fats off of surfaces. 

Other effective soap substitutes include wood ash or charcoal. Both work to remove fat and grease effectively. You can use wood ash from a campfire or BBQ, but just be careful not to use fuel or starter fluid on the fire.  These are toxic and should not be used on dishes or other items which go in the mouth. 

Should You Soak Dishes in Warm Water Before Washing?

This is a somewhat controversial topic for some people, but you should not soak your dirty dishes before washing them. Many people like to do this because it helps to soften burnt-on debris and make the whole cleaning process easier. However, if you soak dishes with food debris on them the substance can act as a breeding ground in tepid water.

But, this is only a general rule of thumb. If you have a frying pan with some tough burnt eggs, soaking the pan is not a bad idea. Rather there are two things you want to avoid when soaking your dishes. 

The first is uncooked or raw debris. If you have dishes that you used to slice raw meat or have remnants of blood or flesh and then place this dish in a wash pan to soak with other dishes then the bacteria will likely multiply. 

You want to avoid soaking your dishes in water filled with chunks of raw meat and eggs. These are full of potentially harmful bacteria and will not be killed by the water. 

The second thing to avoid when soaking your dishes is cross-contamination. If you have some dishpans with burnt food on them, they can safely be soaked together. This is because burnt food does not have the bacteria that is in raw food. 

However, you should not soak these dishes with other, more contaminated dishes. Only use the soaking method for dishes that require it, and never for dishes used for raw foods. 

Proper Dishwashing Procedure

Now that you know what not to do, it is important to have an idea of how to go about properly washing your dishes. Whether you have soap or not.

  1. Rinse every dish in hot water
  2. Try to scrape off any large debris from the surface
  3. Remove the dish from the water and place your solvent of choice on the surface or on your cleaning device (we do not recommend sponges, but rather a porous sponge that does not absorb water)
  4. Scrub the surface, using circular motions for the best results
  5. Rinse under hot water again and continue until no grease or debris remains
  6. Place your dishes in a pan of hot water (at least 110 degrees Fahrenheit) and let them soak for a few minutes before drying

You do not need to follow these steps exactly. However, we recommend it for the best results!

Put the mixture of vinegar, water, and vanilla, then heat it for around 6 minutes. You should see steam fill the microwave after the solution boils.

  • If you notice build-up, remove the gaskets (check your manual)
  • Place your gasket in the sink
  • Fill the sink up with soapy hot water and let it soak for 30 minutes
  • Meanwhile, ensure the door is held shut with duct tape or other adhesive tape
  • After 30 minutes, remove the gasket and dry it with a rag 
  • Make sure to reach into the crevices of the gasket the best you can 
  • Follow the manual’s directions to replace it back in the freezer

If you notice while cleaning this gasket any tears along the line of the gasket, you should replace it. These tears are disruptive to the sealing process and can cause your freezer to become warm. 

Clean the Vents

If you notice your freezer’s vents are covered in ice or dust, this can cause the freezer to warm up. This is because the vents are essential for filtering the air throughout your unit and keeping it cool. 

There is usually a vent in the back of the interior of your freezer which can become caked with ice and dust. To clean this, start by taking a rag and soaking it in hot water with soap. Then, wipe the vent the best you can. 

The heat from the water should remove most of the ice and any dirt which may have accumulated. If you notice this does not improve your freezer’s function, you may need to remove the cover. 

To remove the cover, use a small screwdriver to remove the screws holding the vent cover on. You may want to use a vacuum cleaner’s hose and suck up some of the dirt and dust from inside. Consult your freezer’s manual for further directions.

Check the Evaporator Coils and Fan

To determine this, you must base the decision on what type of food you have. First, any food above 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius) should be suspected.

  • Meat: 40 degrees or above for 2 hours or more should be thrown away
