Why Your Oven Display Says Dr (What To Do)

Appliances communicate with us through the use of codes and sounds. Well, they inform us of what’s wrong, or what could be wrong. Different error codes have different meanings, which makes it easier for both the user and customer support to know where to start looking.

If your oven, all of a sudden, started displaying the Dr error code, then you’re in the right place. Let’s look at what the oven actually is trying to tell you.

Your oven will display the Dr error code because the oven thinks the door is still open, which will prevent the oven from heating up. Unplug the oven then check if the door is firmly shut or if something is preventing it from closing all the way. If the oven door can be shut properly and the code still appears once plugged in again, then the door switch at the top of the door or the control board could be faulty and should, therefore, be replaced.

Unplugging the appliance can sometimes solve error codes as most codes are a result of irregularities in the power supply. The codes will be refreshed when the appliance has been disconnected for about a minute.

If the code still appears when the unit is turned back on, then there’s most likely something causing the problem, and not just irregularities or coincidence.

So, what else can be done? Let’s take a look at what others have done to get their oven back to normal, and hope that the same methods will work for you.

What To Do If Your Oven Says Dr

First and foremost, start by inspecting the oven door and make sure it can be closed properly. Visually inspect every nook and cranny of the door, especially around the lock assembly. If the door can be closed as intended and the code still appears, unplug the appliance and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before you plug it back in.

If the door can’t be closed, clean the oven door to get rid of grime or other junk that may prevent the door from closing.

If none of these work – continue reading to make sure you’re well aware of other things that commonly cause this error code and if it comes down to it – replace the door switch. Here’s a video on Youtube that shows you where the door switch is located and how to replace it.

But, as I said, I recommend reading the rest of the article before you consider replacing the door switch.

Other things you should check that could cause your oven to display the Dr error code include the following:

  • Settings after a power outage: Check the oven’s settings if there’s been a power outage recently. A power outage can freeze the oven’s clock during the duration of the outage. This can cause the internal clock to be off when the power turns back on. Some oven’s require the clock function to be on in order for certain functions to work properly.
  • Control board: If the oven’s control board malfunctions, the oven can suddenly start displaying error codes or stop working completely.
  • Wires: The wires leading from the door switch to the control board should also be checked for continuity. Make sure the wires are firmly connected to both the door switch and control board.

This error code can appear on ovens from a variety of brands. I have been able to fix a Kenmore and Frigadaire oven using the methods described in the article. I’m sure other brands can display the same error codes, and that’s why I always recommend getting in contact with customer support before you start troubleshooting.

Remember to provide serial or product number when calling customer support or a technician. Knowing the model will make it easier for them to assist you in solving the problem and finding compatible replacement parts if needed.
